Why am I a Mason? |

|
This is the first question we should be ready to answer when asked about Masonry. Some don't have an answer and others often go into a discussion about what Masonry is rather than the personal reasons for belonging to Masonry. And, while most of us are aware of the history of Masonry, that it began in the early periods of man's social development, probably evolving out of the craft guilds, that the Templars added certain values and methods of secreting our issues and purposes, that after the building of the great cathedrals, the rising merchant class in Europe changed the Craft from operative to speculative and that we are a fraternity of like minded men who love family, God and country. This is good but it does not answer the question, "Why am I a Mason?"
There are many published accounts of Masonic principles, charities and reasons for belonging. The meaning of Masonry is different for each man, some expressed eloquently, others simply knowing deep within their soul that it is the background layer of ethics and philosophy that drives their being. Although I did search the literature, first I searched my heart and came up with these motives. I find first that to truly be a Mason at heart, one must travel the road of selflessness. The true reason why I am a Mason is very close to my heart. In summary, it follows as this: Caring For Self, Family And Community Each of these reasons warrants a full and detailed description but at this point shall simply serve as markers for these worthy principles. There are many more reasons for being a Mason. Belonging is a personal choice and commitment. These are my reasons. That is why I am a Mason. If we can readily relate our personal commitments and feelings, we may be more effective in encouraging and teaching anyone who may wish education about our fraternity. Fraternally, |
